Christmas in Les Baux-de-Provence

noel aux baux de provence gite 13520

The church square in Les Baux-de-Provence is transformed into a living tableau with «La Bergerie de Noël» (23 December – 7 January), where children can meet shepherds and their sheep in a nativity scene setting. They listen to stories about pastoral life and the shepherd’s trade in Provence.

In addition, there is an exciting treasure hunt, «Find Janot, the santon-maker from Les Baux». Available from the Tourist Office, this treasure hunt takes participants on a journey through the village to unravel the mystery of Janot the santon-maker’s disappearance.

From 10 December to 7 January, Provençal nativity scenes – an essential part of the festive season – provide an accurate depiction of traditional village life. The Musée des Santons, open daily, offers an in-depth insight into these historic figurines.

The festivities include barrel organ performances by Francis Cauli, who brings the streets to life with old songs and magic tricks, from 23 December to 7 January (2.00 pm–5.30 pm, except on 24 and 25 December).

Finally, the midnight mass at Saint-Vincent Church is enhanced by the traditional Pastrage ceremony, during which the villagers pay tribute to the shepherds in front of the church. A traditional Provençal nativity scene and colourful santons complete this immersion in the magic of Christmas in Les Baux-de-Provence.

He began his career in photography in 1929, and in 1931 he joined André Vigneau’s studio, which gave him the opportunity to publish his first photo essays.

After the Second World War, Doisneau regularly published his work in renowned magazines such as *Life*, *Point-de-Vue*, *Regards* and *Picture Post*. He was awarded the Kodak Prize in 1947 and the Niepce Prize in 1956, and was invited to take part in numerous major international exhibitions.
